The Pinocchio Paradox

I thought about this multiple times.

But there is actually a solution to the Pinnochio Paradox. It is possible that Pinnochio is not lying but his nose will still not grow: he is simply mistaken. If he *genuinely* thinks his nose will grow (for whatever reason), and is simply expressing what he thinks will happen, then he is not at all lying. Therefore, his nose will not grow.

Why would he genuinely think his nose will grow? Well, there’s the fact that he’s a wooden puppet and not blessed with a high IQ, so he’s rather simple-minded and gullible (as his story proved). He might have forgotten what would make his nose grow, and just thinks that it grows for some reason. Being simple-minded, he could be hypnotized to say those words and the nose will not grow.

Another possible solution to the paradox is that the nose’s lie detection and/or lengthening powers are faulty, balky, intermittent, dead, or expired. We all make the assumption that magical powers always work, and that they won’t expire unless revoked by giver. What if the assumption is wrong. What if magical powers are not perfect. What if Pinnochio’s fairy hasn’t mastered her magical powers yet.

It is possible that Pinnochio could be deliberately lying and the nose will not grow because the nose has (temporarily or permanently) lost its lie-detection ability and/or its lengthening function.
